Bahnstreik wird ab morgen früh für viele Zug-Ausfälle sorgen 2024

The members of the labor union at DB Cargo, responsible for freight transportation, have been called to strike starting from 6 p.m. tonight. Just last Friday, the German Railway (DB) presented a new wage offer to the GDL union, which includes, among other things, an option for one hour less working time for train drivers and conductors from January 1, 2026. However, this seems not to have been sufficient for new negotiations. In a statement, GDL expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the DB's third allegedly improved offer shows their persistent refusal and confrontational approach, with no sign of willingness to reach an agreement.

The DB criticized the renewed strike announcement, calling the plans "irresponsible." A spokesperson for the railway said, "The DB is aiming for compromises, while the GDL is escalating the conflict immeasurably. Acting absolutely irresponsibly is when someone doesn't even come to the negotiating table with a new offer of up to 13 percent and the possibility of a 37-hour workweek at the same salary." The DB claims it will not take legal action against the announced strike this time.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) also criticized the situation, emphasizing that solutions are only possible through negotiations, not by avoiding the issues. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) expressed a desire for quick and constructive talks but stated he would not intervene in the conflict. The Greens supported the idea of a mediation process.

During the strike, the DB anticipates "significant disruptions" in long-distance, regional, and S-Bahn train services. Passengers with tickets for travel from Wednesday onwards can reschedule their trips, and tickets can be used or canceled at a later time. A contingency plan will provide only a very limited train service in regional and long-distance travel, with longer trains and more seats to accommodate as many passengers as possible.

In Lower Saxony, some lines are expected to operate on a two-hour schedule, while others may be canceled. Notably, trains operated by Metronom, Enno, and Transdev, including the S-Bahn Hannover and the Nordwestbahn, will not be affected by the strike. However, disruptions and delays may occur due to strike-affected signal systems.
